Understanding how something work gives you a better understanding on how to fix it

There is a “shift” happening in bicycle service shops all around the world.  With online sales starting to take a chunk of the revenue from bicycle shops, owners are starting to take note of the service side of their business.   The automotive and motorcycle industries have been relying on the service side of their business for years.  Those jobs are paying a living wage, they are doing this by keeping tabs on their shops image, tracking profitability/productivity, mechanic education and confidently charging/selling service.

Our fall schedule is up, you can view it here. Let us know if you have any questions, please email us – info@bikeroom.ca

Our 2 week mechanic training program is designed for the rider or mechanic who wants to gain confidence working on bicycles.  Classes run from 9am to 5pm starting Monday and ending on the following Friday.  This program is very hands on, working with used bikes when we can so you can get the full bike shop experience.  Our classes are small (limited to 5) and very interactive.  You’ll be working at your own bench with your hands always dirty.

At Bikeroom:

  • We teach and learn on all types of bikes and components whether it be a road bike, mountain bike, commuter bike or unicycle, all skills are transferable.  This program includes: disc brakes (both hydraulic and mechanical), cartridge and loose ball bearing systems, suspension, shift system, wheel building and much more.
  • We teach the principle not the procedure.  This allows mechanics to take the skills they learn and apply them to any repair situation.
  • Students will come out of the course feeling confident to tackle any job on any make or model of bicycle.
  • Learn how to use “your” tools. The best mechanics are not created equal, neither are the best tools.  We have multiple tool sets so you learn the ”person-ability” behind a variety of different tools.  You can figure out why a tool works better or worse for you.
  • Intertwined throughout the course is profitability and productivity as well as customer service aspects.  Students will come out of the program with a basic understanding of the numbers and customer satisfaction.
  • On the Saturday we venture across town to visit some bike shops, see how they operate and talk with fellow mechanics.
  • To keep the classroom fun we often go for lunch and explore the local bicycle community together

Want a job as a mechanic in a bike shop?  This is your foot in the door.  Want to open your garage to the community or start you own shop, this program will give you the confidence moving forward.

As a mechanic you can’t know everything, students will leave this course with not only amazing mechanical skill but the knowledge and know how to improve on those skills.  We teach you how to find the right information to tackle any job at home or in the repair shop.

Cost: $3150 + 5% tax

Mechanics today are required to work on many different models of bicycle components from multiple manufacturers.  It’s up to the mechanic to service and maintain these components to manufacturers standards while doing so in a timely manner.  In order to achieve this a mechanic needs to be able to find tech documents and procedural guides so they get it done right, the first time.  At the Bikeroom we can give you the confidence to service and maintain any component on the bicycle.

Our 4 Day Intensive includes:

  • Servicing and maintaining many different makes of suspension forks (Rock Shocks, Fox and Suntour)
  • Overhauling and bleeding all makes of disc brakes (Shimano, Sram, etc)
  • 1 full day with Reverbs: Learn to maintain, service and charge accordingly
  • Access and service rear shocks including charging for a 3rd party service

This program is an add-on to our two week mechanic program and is designed around keeping productivity and profitability in mind.  To be a good mechanic you are required to uphold a standard set by yourself, the service shop you work in and the manufacturer.  This also means being productive and to turn the lights on and keep them on, profitable.

Prerequisites to this course are our 2 week mechanic program/any other bicycle school 2 week program,  or at least 1 year working as a mechanic in a recognized bicycle shop.

Cost: $2250

Looking to take your shop to the next level?  Have Bikeroom come and work alongside your mechanics in your service shop.

This multi day intensive program is for the shop owner, manager or mechanics who wants to understand productivity/profitability, selling and charging properly for service, setting your shop rate and individual repairs as well as marketing your shops image.

During this program:

  • Come out with an understanding of the numbers behind the service shop, learning what it takes to keep the lights on!
  • Learn to track productivity and profitability in your service shop and understand why it’s important.  Everyone wants to be challenged and wants to feel at the end of the day that they’ve accomplished something.  Mechanics want to prove their worth – let them show you how!
  • Flat Rate Chart tailored to their shop, to help keep pricing consistent and teach mechanics how to use it.  Bikeroom believes the Flat Rate Chart is the backbone of the service shop.
  • Sell your shops image, sell your skills and sell service.  Customers need to know the value of your service and mechanics need to be confident charging for their service.
  • Learn how to hire mechanics, integrate them into your service shop, train them and then keep the learning going.  All shops have a plethora of mechanics right under their nose wanting to work their way up the ranks.  We will teach you how to train and develop the happy rider with a great attitude and bit of skill to be a beautiful mechanic.
  • This program also includes time management, communication and conflict resolution skills

This  program will leave you with the tools and confidence to grow and build happy mechanics, happy customers and because the numbers will show…..happy owners.  Your service shop mechanics will learn how to run their service shop in a productive and profitable manner with customer satisfaction in mind for years to come.

At Bikeroom we believe the service shop should not just be an asset to the bike store but a money maker as well.
